History of far gaze point
Lilian and Dinah
Fred
Fred and Lilian (Austermell) Pamperien of LaGrange, Illinois purchased the
property on which the cottage now sits in 1926.

Like many Chicago residents, Lilian had come with her family to the
Saugatuck area to escape the summer heat on many occasions prior to her
marriage to Frederick George Pamperien of LaGrange, Illinois in 1911.  The
family sometimes stayed on "The Hayes Farm", which included the
property on which the cottage now resides.

Lilian, Fred and their two daughters, Phyllis and Elizabeth, continued to
vacation in this area, and in 1926 Fred and Lilian  bought land from Mr.
Hayes. When the cottage was completed first occupied in July 1931, the
local paper "The Commercial Record" referred to the spot as "Maple Bluff".

The girls selected the name "Far Gaze Point" because of their father's
initials "F.G.P". The property sits on the point of a plateau overlooking the
bend of the Kalamazoo River. As late as the 1960's, there was a wonderfully
clear view of the Kalamazoo River valley in both directions. Growth of trees
on the hillsides has now somewhat restricted that view except for the winter
months.
"This quaint cottage
has been the source
of happy memories for
four generations of
our family. By sharing
it with you, we hope it
will be a part of your
happy memories as
well."
